Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. While a small infant, Ford struggled with anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by word associations. Ford's interest in acting began in her early years. She was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a month, she decided that it wasn't suitable for her. Ford applied instead to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured the position she wanted on her third try. Her classmate was Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993, but she already had her TV debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. In the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She also worked regularly in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. However, Tate soon began to garner attention for her stand-up comic, which she added to her repertoire in 1996.
